1996 TCU Men's Tennis Recap

En route to its highest final ranking ever, TCU men's tennis posted several program bests in 1995-96.

For the Horned Frogs, ranked No. 3 in the final Rolex Collegiate Tennis Rankings, it was a season which produced four all-American players - seniors Paul Robinson and David Roditi, and juniors Ashley Fisher and Jason Weir-Smith - more than any previous campaign at TCU.

The Frogs fell to then No. 1 ranked UCLA, in the NCAA semifinals to close the season at 23-3 overall.

It was the TCU's fifth Top 10 Ranking in the past eight years, and the program's 19th Top Twenty finish in the past 20 years under Tut Bartzen, the 1996 ITA Region VI Coach of the Year.

TCU rode a school record 88.5% winning percentage and a 23-3 overall record to its best final Rolex Collegiate Ranking in school history, finishing the year at No. 3.

The 1996 Horned Frogs, stocked with four all-Americans, became only the second TCU tennis squad to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Team Championships, equalling the 1989 squad's finish, before falling to then No. 1 ranked UCLA, 4-2.

TCU also posted a NCAA Doubles Championships finalist, as juniors Ashley Fisher and Jason Weir-Smith became the second TCU duo to reach the finals before losing to No. 1 ranked Justin Gimelstob and Srdjan Muskatirovic in three sets. They finished the season ranked No. 6.

While posting a perfect 6-0 SWC record, the Horned Frogs swept the final SWC regular season title and SWC Championship crown. Head Coach Tut Bartzen, coaching in his 23rd season, won the ITA Region VI Coach of the Year award, senior Paul Robinson was named the ITA Region VI Senior Player of the Year, senior David Roditi captured the ITA Region VI John Van Nostrand Memorial Award, and freshman Gonzalo Corrales received the ITA Region VI Rookie of the Year Award.

Robinson and Roditi won their third ITA Grand Slam doubles title in the fall with a championship at the Clay Courts in September. Robinson added his first ever singles Grand Slam title at the Clay Courts. Fisher and Weir-Smith reached the doubles semifinals of the next Grand Slam, the ITA All-American in Austin, as did Robinson and Roditi.
