1995 TCU Men's Soccer Recap

The 1995 edition of the TCU Horned Frog men's soccer team showed a dramatic improvement over the 1994 squad which finished 4-15. Coach David Rubinson's 1995 team improved to 10-7 on the year, and finished with a number seven ranking in the ISAA Regional poll, after being ranked as high as fifth during the season. It was the first time the TCU men had been ranked since the 1990 squad finished 10-6-2.

The Horned Frogs, got off to a fast start, holding a 9-3 record after a home win over UT-Dallas on October 18th. The Frogs finished with marks of 6-3 at home, 4-2 in away contests, and 0-2 in neutral site games.

The 1995 season saw a dramatic increase in scoring for the Frogs, with the offense averaging 22 goals per game and scoring 110 points (39 goals and 32 assists).

Leading scorers were co-captains Peter Vail and Kyle Sawai. Senior forward Vail of Austin, Texas took 39 shots on goal, capitalizing with 10 goals and three assists for 23 total points.

Equaling his scoring output from last season was junior midfielder Kyle Sawai, a Kaneoa, Hawaii native. Sawai recorded eight goals and seven assists on the year to total 23 points.

Three other Frogs recorded double figures in points: midfielders Jeff Sommer (14) and Mark Papini (11), and forward Britt Stroud (13).

No fewer than five Frogs logged time between the pipes this season for TCU. Sophomore Brent Erwin earned the starting nod as goalkeeper and in 13 starts recorded 4 shutouts, 57 saves and a 1.94 goals-against average.

Beginning with the 1996 season, TCU will compete in the Western Athletic Conference. TCU has eight conference matches slated for 1996: Tulsa, San Jose State, Fresno State. and SMU at home and New Mexico, Air Force, UNLV, and San Diego State on the road.
