Malcolm Johnson scored nine of his 18 points in a key second-half run as Texas Christian defeated a top 10 opponent for the first time in nearly 14 years with an 80-59 demolition of ninth-ranked New Mexico in a Western Athletic Conference clash.
Saipele Tuialii had a career-high 18 points for the Horned Frogs (15-8, 4-6), whose last victory over a top 10 opponent was a 61-58 victory over number six Arkansas in the semifinals of the Southwest Conference tournament on March 5th, 1983.
Charles Smith scored 23 points and Clayton Shields added 17 for New Mexico (18-4, 7-3), which had its five-game winning streak snapped. The Lobos fell into second place in the WAC Mountain Division, one-half game behind Tulsa.
TCU defeated the Lobos for the first time in four tries and avenged a 79-64 loss on January 9th. The Horned Frogs have won eight of their 15 games by at least 20 points.
Texas Christian used a 16-6 run over the final 5:45 of the first half to take a 40-29 lead. After a putback by Smith pulled New Mexico within 24-23, Johnson hit two free throws and Damion Walker added one to make it 27-23. Lamont Long made a foul shot for the Lobos before James Penny and Shields traded baskets.
Walker knocked down a jumper and Penny converted a layup to push the lead to 33-26. Tuialii drilled a three-pointer and Johnson added a layup to make it 38-26 with 1:43 left. Shields hit a three-pointer for New Mexico, but Walker made two foul shots with 51 seconds left to cap the scoring.
A dunk by Kenny Thomas brought the Lobos within, 44-37, less than three minutes into the second half, but Johnson answered with a runner, Walker drilled a 14-footer and Tuialii knocked down a three-pointer to give TCU a 51-37 cushion, forcing New Mexico to call timeout.
But the Horned Frogs didn't let up as Johnson made two free throws, Mike Jones hit a three-pointer and Tuialii hit a jumper in the lane before Johnson capped the run with two free throws, giving TCU a 60-37 bulge with 12:35 remaining.
Tuialii gave the Horned Frogs their largest lead with 4:59 to play, giving TCU a 74-43 bulge.
Penny and Walker added 12 points apiece for the Horned Frogs, who shot 42 percent (30-of-71) from the field and outrebounded New Mexico, 45-26, including a 24-9 edge on the offensive glass.
No other player scored in double figures for the Lobos, who shot 43 percent (20-of-47) from the floor and committed 21 turnovers, 14 in the second half.
