Mar 14-16, Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic
Great Hills GC, Austin, TX
(3/16) As Angela Stanford walked up the fairway on the final hole of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic on Sunday at Great Hills Golf Club, her thoughts were on how she would apologize for letting down her teammates.
Even if she parred the hole, she would still get dusted by her two playing partners in the event's final group, giving up valuable strokes to North Carolina and host Texas in the team battle.
"I thought I was in deep trouble because I shot a 78," the Texas Christian freshman said. "I thought I was really going to have to eat it on the way home."
Crow. Stanford was ready for the family-sized portion.
Sure enough, when her 2-foot putt dropped to give her a par, her teammates began screaming.
In pure, unmitigated joy.
Stanford's 78 wasn't among the top rounds of the day, but it was just what the Horned Frogs needed, allowing them to hold off a fierce final-round charge by Duke by one stroke. The dark-horse Frogs, ranked 32nd in the country, shot a 54-hole total of 938 (par 876).
Duke, looking for back-to-back Rawls titles, surged from five strokes behind second-round leader North Carolina to take second, one stroke ahead of the Tar Heels and two ahead of the Longhorns.
Texas senior Heather Bowie, who led the medalist race through the first two days, had trouble with her putting and shot a 76, allowing UNC's Marcy Newton to turn a two-shot deficit into a two-shot win.
"My putter bro ... just let me down today," said Bowie, who three-putted three of five holes around the turn.
Sophomore Shannon Fisher of Westwood High School shot a final-round 74 to pace the Frogs.
She and her teammates knew the importance of Stanford's finish -- but they weren't letting on.
"We were trying to look as normal as we could," Fisher said.
"I would've been a nervous wreck coming up 18 if I'd known," Stanford said. "I was completely clueless. ... When they started screaming after the par putt, I almost fell over."
(3/15) North Carolina, posting four of the 16 lowest scores Saturday, roared from 14 strokes back to take a one-shot lead over Texas Christian and host Texas at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic.
TCU, which has banked on consistency -- no score lower than 76 or higher than 82 -- and its short game, is looking for its second tournament win of the season in today's final round.
"We knew we could be this good,'' said Coach Angie Ravaioli- Larkin. ''But I think we're shaking a few people up.''
