TCU men's golf coach Bill Montigel announced Monday the signing of Scott Volpitto, standout from Augusta, Georgia to a national letter of intent.
Volpitto was recently named a 1996 second-team Rolex Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).
Volpitto won one AJGA event this past summer, the Oklahoma Junior Classic. En route to All American honors, he recorded a scoring average of 73.0 and had a total of seven top-20 finishes in 10 AJGA events. He was also a member of the victorious 1996 East Canon Cup team. In 1994, he was an honorable mention AJGA Rolex Junior All-American and he won the Club Corp Junior Players Invitational.
In addition, Volpitto has won the last three Georgia State Golf Association Junior Championships. He first entered the national spotlight in 1992 as a 13 year old, when he won the Future Masters Golf Tournament in Dothan, Alabama.
Montigel, who has guided the Horned Frogs to the NCAA regionals the last seven years and to appearances in the NCAA Championships in five of the last six years expressed his excitement over the addition of Volpitto to the TCU lineup next season.
"I am very excited, as is our entire golf team to sign Scott," said Montigel. "He was our number one recruit from the start. I think he really fits in well with our players. Scott has a great attitude and temperament for the game. If he continues to work hard, then he should give us immediate help next season, especially with the loss of our two seniors.
The addition of Volpitto to the 1996-97 lineup should ease the loss of seniors Deron Zinnecker and Brent Wolf. The Frogs, currently ranked fourth in the latest Rolex Top-25 Men's Rankings, will benefit from the return of junior Grady Girard, who is redshirting this season.
