July, 1996
Akin to the offensive line and the fullback position, although probably not as deep as either of those areas, the Frogs' wide receivers promise to be among the favorite pieces on TCU's offensive game board for 1996. Prime reasons are the return of speedsters John Washington and Jason Tucker, who combined for 83 catches and 1,132 yards last campaign.
The elusive Washington led the Southwest Conference in receiving a year ago with his 4.7 grabs per game (52 catches) en route to 699 yards and six touchdowns.
Tucker, a junior who prefers to pull in the long ball, enjoyed 31 catches (for 433 yards) before injuries caught up to him.
After that pair, the Horned Frogs' offensive minds begin to fret a little. Though several others show great promise, only junior Troy Williams, one catch for 28 yards in '95, has ever recorded a collegiate reception among the Frogs' other wide receivers.
Williams, who also proved himself last season in the all-important skills as downfield blocker, along with sophomore Tavarus Moore, redshirt freshman Torrie Simmons, walk-ons Taylor Kriscke and Ralph Diamond, round out the group of returners here.
They will be joined in pre-fall work by a trio of promising newcomers -juco transfer Rodney Lauderdale and highly touted freshmen Patrick Batteaux and Timothy Maiden.
Overall speed accentuates the Horned Frogs' receiving corps beginning with the bests of Washington (4.32) and Lauderdale (4.35), but the not-to-be-ignored best of Tucker (4.40) and the sub-4.5s of talents Williams, Batteaux, Simmons and Moore.
