Basil Mitchell's third touchdown of the game, a 74-yard scamper with 1:45 to play, snapped a tie and propelled Texas Christian University to a 31-24 victory over Tulsa in a Western Athletic Conference clash.
The Golden Hurricane (3-6, 1-5 WAC Mountain Division) forced a 24-24 tie 55 seconds earlier on a six-yard TD run with 2:40 to play. But on the third play after the ensuing kickoff, Mitchell broke loose for the go-ahead score.
Tulsa led 3-0 at halftime and extended its lead to 10-0 on an 18-yard touchdown run by Reggie Williams 1:48 into the second half. But the Horned Frogs (4-5, 3-3 Mountain) rallied to take a 14-10 lead on a one-yard run by Jeff Dover and a 23-yard gallop by Mitchell.
The Golden Hurricane took back the lead 17-14 on a four-yard run by Williams with four seconds left in the third quarter. Micheal Reeder tied the game for TCU with a 36-yard field goal and Mitchell's three-yard dash gave the Horned Frogs a 24-17 lead with 7:23 remaining.
Mitchell finished with 215 yards on 23 carries for the Horned Frogs, who had 454 yards of total offense. He also caught three passes for 68 yards. Jeff Dover completed 12-of-22 passes for 166 yards.
White had 17 rushes for 112 yards for Tulsa, which had two interceptions. Williams added 86 yards rushing and John Fitzgerald completed 12-of-22 passes for 162 yards and one interception. Troy DeGar completed just 4-of-12 for 50 yards.
