Long on potential and close to nil on experience is a polite way to describe TCU's current collection of tight ends. Only two of the five tight ends headed to the Horned Frogs' pre-season camp have ever logged minutes in collegiate football games. Two others are yet to don TCU uniforms, and a third spent most of his first year at Frogland on defense.
"We have some ability and we should be all right in time," says tight end coach Dan Sharp, "but heading in (to the season) we don't have very many athletes who have a solid grasp of our system."
Early on, sophomore letterman Travis Wilson (6-3, 240), with his two years in the system, has the edge on the position. Behind him is bright redshirt freshman Kyle Williams (6-4, 240). Journeyman Chad Avery (6-4, 240), along with newcomers Mike Brown (6-4, 250) and Mike Keathley (6-4. 235) round out TCU's tight end cast.
Sharp describes Wilson as "dependable and a solid blocker." The young Williams, who finished the spring at No. 2, is clearly the most athletic of the group, especially among those skills necessary for playing tight end.
Mike Brown
Most believe the powerful Brown, who enjoyed a sterling career at Blinn (Tex.) Community College, will wrest away the position once he becomes comfortable with TCU's system.
Keathley, only a first-year fresh, also is immensely talented though the Frog staff had just as soon he not have to burn a potential redshirt year, if possible.
Over the previous four seasons,TCU's tight ends have harvested an average 36 catches per campaign, so it appears this present untested group has a lot of "catching" up.
