July, 1996
While encouraging depth exists in the defensive: interior, at the end positions and at linebacker for TCU in 1996, it appears that if the Horned Frogs possess an Achilles heel on defense it likely will be their lack of depth in the secondary. The frontliners are first rate, but only four deep defenders expected to be in TCU's pre-season camp have ever logged extensive playing time at these positions.
Chris Staten
Godfrey White
Strong safety Chris Staten (6-0, 172) and Godfrey White (5-10, 180) return after strong showings as sophomore starters and Cedric Allen (5-10, 185) was nearly as impressive as an often-used backup and as a nickel back. Projected to join that trio in the starting lineup is one of the most welcomed finds of TCU's spring work - sophomore free safety Barry Browning (5-9, 190)- a mid-year transfer from Oklahoma State.
White and Allen offer the Frogs a solid pair of corners, while Staten and Browning present similar attributes at the safeties. All four can motor. However, beyond that foursome only talented junior Corey Masters (5-10, 182) has been exposed to secondary fire in the college ranks.
That explains why such premiums are being placed on the rapid developments of juco transfer Terrell Sutton (5-11, 180), along with freshmen hopefuls Reggie Hunt (6-1, 197) and Terrance Cook (5-10, 190).
Also on board to provide backup support at free and strong safety, respectively, are previous letter winners Lenward Bentley (6-1, 195) and Joseph Phipps (6-2, 205), who switched from linebacker to secondary duties in the spring, and walk on hopeful Brian Henderson (6-0, 188).
Besides speed, TCU's secondary principles are set apart by another rather obvious feature. They thrive on being collision-minded, especially Staten, Browning, White and young Hunt. It's as though they are fiercely intent on redefining the area, and the meaning, of the defensive term "drop zone."
