Spencer George scored two touchdowns in a 20-point second quarter as Rice decked Texas Christian, 30-17, in a Western Athletic Conference affair.
The Owls (6-4, 5-2 WAC Mountain) bounced back from a 49-0 thrashing at Brigham Young last week. George finished with 80 yards rushing on 19 carries as Rice rolled up 270 rushing yards and 453 yards of total offense.
Texas Christian (4-6, 3-4 Mountain) took a 3-0 lead on a 47-yard field goal by Michael Reeder with 3:39 left in the first quarter, but the Owls dominated the second quarter as George gave Rice the lead for good with a six-yard jaunt to make it 6-3 22 seconds into the second quarter.
Chad Richardson extended the lead to 13-3 with a 69-yard TD pass to Jason Blackwell with 6:12 to play in the first half. George capped the outburst with a four-yard burst with 1:04 left in the first half.
Benji Wood extended the lead to 27-3 with a one-yard plunge 6:14 into the second half. Clifton Clemons stopped the run by returning a fumble four yards for a score with 6:20 left in the third quarter to pull the Horned Frogs within 27-10.
Mike Ruff kicked a 40-yard field goal 5:22 into the second half for Rice before Fred Taylor hooked up on an 11-yard TD pass to Jason Tucker with 1:44 to play.
Richardson completed 4-of-8 passes for 183 yards. Blackwell had two receptions for 103 yards. Taylor, playing in relief of Jeff Dover, completed 4-of-6 passes for 66 yards for TCU. Dover completed 17-of-27 passes for 173 yards.
