July, 1996
Even though the '95 starters on TCU's defensive wings - Chris Piland and Hayes Rydel - have departed, chances are the Horned Frogs will be ably served here this fall as they were a year ago.
"We may not account for as man; sacks here as we had," says defensive coordinator Pat Henderson, mulling over the nine and one-half sacks Piland contributed a year ago, "but we should compare quite favorably in our performances here as before (1995). We certainly will have much better depth and all of those players are excellent athletes."
Henderson was referring to juniors Chance McCarty and Matt Harper, senior Billy Thompson, sophomore Darryl Johnson and freshman Akili Johnson.
Chance McCarty
Matt Harper
McCarty and Harper, a transfer from Stanford, both have shown to be remarkable athletes with the others close behind. Harper and Thompson, a pair of 255 pounders, and Akili Johnson at 245, are expected to handle the strongside end chore while McCarty and Darryl Johnson are being counted on to use their speed and quickness at the weakside end role. Harper, McCarty and D. Johnson all offer 4.8 or better speed on TCU's wings. It appears that it will be difficult for any of the Frogs' touted freshmen signees to crack the playing rotation at those spots in 1996.
