Villarreal proved a valuable addition in 1995, his first year as the Director of Football Operations for Horned Frog football. Villarreal's multitude of responsibilities with TCU's grid program include office management and administration; game day responsibilities; liaison with various athletic and university departments; team travel; and recruiting visitations.

The 38-year-old Villarreal, a native of Gulfport, Mississippi, had spent the previous four years on the coaching staff at Louisiana State University, three as an administrative assistant, and the final one (1994) as tight ends coach and recruiting coach.

Prior to LSU, Villarreal had served two years as a graduate assistant under head coach Curley Hallman at Southern Mississippi. He is a former all-city football and state tennis champion at St. John's High School in Gulfport, Mississippi. There, Villarreal had lettered three times in football and twice in basketball and baseball. He also had been a successful member of the business community before deciding to join the Southern Miss coaching staff in 1989.

Villarreal earned his B.S. degree in physical education from Southern Mississippi in 1990.

He is married to the former D'Lynn Vincent of Pass Christian, Mississippi They have three children - Kimberly Aleece, Justin Dale and Richard Anthony Jr.
