Steve Brickey knows how to coach his quarterbacks. In fact, this fourth-year Horned Frog grid staffer can lay claim to the tutoring of four quarterbacks who currently rank among the SWC's all-time total offense leaders: No, 4 Peter Gardere, Texas (7,407 yards); No. 5. Max Knake, TCU 17,150); No. 9 Billy Joe Tolliver, Texas Tech 16,475); and, No. 20 Bret Stafford, Texas (5,378).
Most recently, Brickey helped groom Knake through his record-setting junior and senior seasons for the Frogs. Brickey had been serving as the offensive coordinator at Indiana State when the TCU opportunity knocked in 1993.
A former University of Missouri footballer, earlier in his career Brickey had recorded stints at both Texas Tech (1986) and Texas (1987-91). Brickey began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant with his alma mater during 1976 and 1977 before joining the staff at Indiana State where he ultimately spent eight years through 1985.
As a prepster at Affton High School, Brickey gained St. Louis All-Metro recognition as a quarterback in 1971, then he chose Missouri to continue his role as a student-footballer. He played both quarterback and defensive back during his four seasons at Mizzou.
A member of the university Dean's List, Brickey earned his B.S. degree in education from Missouri in 1976. He is married to the former Patti Baruzelli of Clinton Indiana. They have three sons -- John, Mike and Chris.
