Entering his second season as a full-time assistant and his fourth season overall as a member of the Horned Frog baseball staff is Donnie Watson.
In addition to his duties as a recruiter, Watson also coaches first base and serves as the TCU hitting instructor.
The 41-year-old graduate of the University of Dallas (Bachelor's, 1978) never intended to return to coaching full-time, but the opportunity to work with Coach Brown and a program on the rise was too good to pass up.
He joined the Frog baseball staff in 1993 as a volunteer to ease back into coaching after working in the private business sector for ten years.
Watson served as the junior varsity coach in the 1993 season. In the 1994 season, he worked with the outfielders and hitters on the varsity level. He was hired full-time in August, 1994, replacing Glen Pierce.
The 1995 season was not Watson's first stint as Brown's right-hand man. He had worked as an assistant to Brown at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, Texas in 1980-81.
He spent the following year as assistant coach at Southlake Carroll High School, where the Dragons won the Class 2A State Championship.
Watson left Carroll in 1982 to become head baseball coach at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, where he compiled a two-year mark of 30-18.
He left the coaching ranks in 1984 to work in private business.
No stranger to the collegiate playing level, Donnie played first, third and pitched at Dallas Baptist University. He led the nation in doubles with 23 in 1978 and finished his career with a .340 batting average.
Despite battling arm and elbow injuries throughout his career, Watson compiled a 23-12 record overall as a pitcher. He was the district MVP and an all-conference selection in 1978.
