1996 TCU Baseball Report
- (6/09) Flint Wallace was selected in the 27th round of the major league June amateur
draft by the Oakland A's. Toby Dollar, a junior, was selected in the 27th round by
the Los Angeles Dodgers. Derek Lee, a junior, was selected in the 28th round by the
Milwaukee Brewers.
- (5/23) TCU freshman DH Royce Huffman has been selected to the 1996 Mizuno Freshmen All-American team, selected by editors of Collegiate Baseball. Huffman hit .360 with 4 home runs and 38 RBI in 48 games for the Frogs. Earlier this spring, Huffman was also named the Newcomer of the Year on the SWC-SID All-Conference team by the SWC SIDs as well as Freshman of the Year by the Austin American Statesman.
- (5/23) TCU third baseman Matt Howe received honorable mention honors on the Mizuno Freshman All-American team. Howe hit .318 with 5 home runs and 50 RBI in 67 games.
- (5/17) TCU loses to Tech 10-6 in the SWC baseball tournament. The loss eliminates
the Frogs. Jeff McCurdy was 4 for 5 and had a three run double in the 2nd inning. The Frogs failed to score three runners who reached third base with less
than two outs in the first four innings. Tech rallied for 3 runs in the 7th and 2 in the 8th, to take
command of the game, benefitting from two walks and two TCU errors.
Scott Atchison started for the Frogs and gave up 4 runs in the first 5 innings.
Heath Collins and Eric Brown were ineffective in relief, giving up 6 runs in 2.2 innings.
- (5/16) TCU loses to Texas 7-5 in the SWC Baseball tournament. Jason Layne
hit a two run homer in the bottom of the 9th for the Longhorns, his second homer of the game.
Derek Lee started for the Frogs, and pitched well, holding the Horns to 2 runs, before
tiring in the 7th. Ryan Walter was unable to shut the Longhorns down in the bottom of the 7th, when they rallied for three runs to tie the game. Walter later gave up the game winning homer
in the 9th.
Royce Huffman hit a long two-run homer to give the Frogs a 4-2 lead. TCU will play the host Texas Tech at 3pm on Friday in an elimination game.
Jeff McCurdy tied a school record with his 133rd career stolen base.
- (5/16) A&M defeated Houston 12-10, while Rice beat Tech 7-3.
- (5/15) TCU defeated Baylor 12-5 in the opener of the SWC Baseball Tournament.
It was the first time TCU has won a first-round game. Matt Howe went 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored and a RBI. Flint Wallace went the distance for his 10th victory (10-5). Wallace stuck out 7.
Sam Lunsford hit a three run homer (4) for the Frogs; Casey Smith hit a
three run double; Jeff McCurdy, David Johnson,
Brad Wallace, and Ryan Dunn added doubles, as the
Frogs had 14 hits.
- The Frogs will now play Texas on Thursday at 3pm.
Rice defeated Texas A&M 9-7; Texas Tech defeated Houston 11-5.
A&M plays Houston at 11am today, while Tech will play Rice at 7pm.
- (5/13) TCU loses to Texas Tech 23-7; Toby Dollar was the losing pitcher (2-8).
David Johnson, Brad Wallace and Sam Lunsford had doubles for the Frogs. TCU was outhit 22 to
10, and the Frogs made 5 errors.
- (5/12) The TCU vs Tech game will be on PRIME at 1pm. It is the last regular season SWC game.
- (5/11) TCU defeated Texas Tech 7-4 in the opener. Flint Wallace went the 7 innings
and recorded his 9th victory (9-5). Brad Wallace homered for the Frogs (5);
Jeff Yarbrough and Jeff McCurdy had doubles. TCU scored 5 in the 3rd to take a 5 run lead, but Tech rallied for 4 in the bottom
of the 3rd. The Frogs then scored 2 more in the 4th.
- (5/11) TCU lost to Tech 9-6 in the nightcap. TCU rallied for 3 in the top of the
7th and in the 9th to tie the game. Derek Lee surrendered 6 runs in the first 4 innings,but finished strong, holding the Red Raiders scoreless the final 5 innings he pitched.
Matt Howe and Brad Wallace had doubles for the Frogs. Scott Atchison suffered the
loss in relief (1-2).
- (5/9) TCU is expected to start Flint Wallace (8-5)
and Derek Lee (7-3) on Saturday's doubleheader.
Toby Dollar, who has allowed only 2 runs in his last 15.2 innings,
is expected to start on Sunday.

Jeff McCurdy is hitting .426 in SWC play this season, and .449 in
his last 17 games.
Jeff Yarbrough has 19 RBIs in his last 10 games.
Ryan Dunn is hitting .514 in his last 9 games. Dunn is listed among league leaders in avg., HRs, RBI, and walks.
David Johnson has 18 hits in his last 29 at-bats (.621).

- (5/9) TCU has already established a new season record for doubles with a total of
137 through 61 games.
- (5/9) TCU and Tech are tenatively scheduled to play 6 non-conference games next season.
- (5/9) Freshman outfielder Royce Huffman was selected as the "Newcomer of the Year" by the SWC Sports Information Directors. Huffman is hitting .367 with 3 homers and 35 RBIs, despite missing time for spring football drills.
- (5/9) Outfielders Ryan Dunn and Jeff McCurdy were selected to the All-SWC team as well as relief pitcher Scott Atchison. Atchison also made the team last year.
- (5/5) TCU defeated Texas 4-1 in the last SWC game held at the TCU Diamond. Toby Dollar (2-7) was the winning pitcher, and held the Longhorns scoreless through
the first 7 innings. Sam Lunsford had a homer for the Frogs, while
Royce Huffman had a key 2 run double; Brad Wallace added a run scoring double.
- (5/4) TCU defeated Texas in the first game 11-6. Derek Lee went the distance
for the Frogs, to up his record to 7-3. Ryan Dunn's grandslam (11) highlighted a 7 run 5th inning. Jeff Yarbrough (2) also homered for the Frogs.
- (5/4) TCU was defeated by Texas in the second game 20-13. TCU fell behind early 9-3,
then scored the next 10 runs. However, the bullpen was unable to hold the lead.
David Johnson had 4 hits and 3 RBIs for the Frogs.
Sam Lunsford (2) and Casey Smith (5) homered for the Frogs. Jeff McCurdy had
two doubles.
- (5/4) TCU and Texas set the all-time college regular season attendance record today at
the Ballpark in Arlington. 21,043 attended today's doubleheader.
- (5/3) TCU loses to Texas, 9-6. TCU had a lead of 6-1 entering the 6th inning.
TCU later had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the 7th, but failed to
cut into the Longhorns lead. Royce Huffman had a three-run homer for the Frogs. David Johnson added two doubles.
David Meyer (2-3) suffered the loss in relief of Scott Atchison.
- (4/30) TCU defeated UTA 13-1, as Toby Dollar (1-7) recorded his first victory. David Johnson had 4 hits, including a home run (8), and 4 RBIs.
Jeff Yarbrough had 4 RBIs, including a three-run double.
Ryan Dunn had three hits, including a triple.
Casey Smith also had three hits.
- (4/28) TCU is defeated by Oklahoma, 7-6 in 14 innings at the Ballpark
in Arlington. TCU rallied for runs in the bottom of the 9th and 10th to extend
the game. Flint Wallace started, and pitched well before giving up a 2 run homer in the top of the 8th which tied the game. Clint Smith was the losing pitcher (0-4). Matt Howe and David Johnson had doubles for the Frogs, while Casey Smith had a triple.
The Sooners benefitted from several Frog baserunning mistakes.
- (4/27) TCU defeated Oklahoma 21-9. Scott Atchison (5-2) was the winning pitcher.
The Frogs pounded out 26 hits, led by Ryan Dunn, who had three hits, two homers (9), and 5 RBIs. Jeff McCurdy had three hits and a homer (3).
David Johnson pounded out 4 hits, while Royce Huffman and Matt Howe also had three hits.
- (4/26) TCU defeated Oklahoma 9-5. Derek Lee (6-3) picked up the victory. Ryan Walter recorded his 2nd save. The Frogs rallied for 8 runs in the middle
innings after trailing 3-0. Jeff Yarbrough had a double, and
Matt Howe had a triple.
The Frogs outhit the Sooners 15-9, but committed 4 errors.
- (4/23) TCU defeated Tarleton State 16-1. Flint Wallace picked up the win (8-5). Royce Huffman homered for the Frogs. Ryan Dunn, Jeff McCurdy, and Jeff Yarbrough added triples. Matt Howe had 3 hits and 4 RBIs. Yarbrough and Dunn also had 3 hits.
- (4/21) TCU defeated Houston 14-4; Scott Atchison (4-2) was the winning pitcher, giving up only 1 run in 7 innings.Jeff Yarbrough had 4 hits, including a home run, and
4 RBIs. David Johnson added a three-run homer.
- (4/20) TCU lost to Houston 10-9 in the 2nd game. Ryan Dunn (8) and Sam Lunsford (1)
hit home runs for the Frogs. The Frogs outhit Houston 17-11, but made two more errors, 4-2.
TCU rallied with 4 in the top of the 9th, but came up one run short.
The Frogs have now lost 7 straight SWC games.
- (4/20) TCU lost to Houston 5-2 in the opener; Derek Lee was the losing pitcher (5-3).
Matt Howe hit his 6th home run for the Frogs.
- (4/19) TCU is defeated by Houston 9-2; Brad Wallace had a 2-run homer for the Frogs; Flint Wallace (7-5) suffered the loss.
- (4/18) Lance Brown needs only one win this weekend to move past Frank Windegger, and become the all-time winningest baseball coach at TCU. Brown is one of only two coaches in SWC history to earn all-conference honors as both a player and a coach.
- (4/18) "Returning Home" - 13 Frogs hail from the Greater Houston area.
- (4/18) OF Jeff McCurdy is expected to return to action this weekend after missing the A&M series with back ailments. C Eric Garner is day-to-day.
- (4/13) TCU is swept by A&M. TCU rallied twice to tie the score in the
second game, but lost 8-7. Ryan Dunn hit a double and a triple for the Frogs.
Scott Atchison (3-2) suffered the loss in relief of Derek Lee.
- The Frogs lost the opener, 16-7. Keith Knoerr homered (7) and hit
a double. Ryan Dunn added two doubles. Toby Dollar (0-7) was the losing pitcher.
- (4/12) TCU loses to A&M 13-3. The Frogs had a failed double-steal in the first;
had another runner picked off later; and hit into a triple play.
Flint Wallace was the losing pitcher.
Stopper Eric Brown is unavailable for this series due to an injury.
- (4/11) DH/QB Royce Huffman plans to play in Thursday's
light football scrimmage, play in Friday's baseball game at A&M, and fly back Saturday to
play in the Saturday afternoon football scrimmage.
- (4/11) Ticket sales are now approaching 10,000 for the doubleheader with UT at the
Ballpark in Arlington.
- (4/11) TCU has 20 stolen bases in 10 SWC games. The Frogs have already stolen
98 bases in 45 games this season. The school record is 133.
Sam Lunsford is tied second in the SWC with 25 steals.
- (4/11) OF Jeff McCurdy is expected to miss the A&M series with back ailments. Backup catcher Eric Garner is expected to be cleared to return to action within the next 2 weeks.
- (4/10) Derek Lee was selected as SWC player of the Week, along with
Rice's Matt Anderson.
- (4/7) TCU is defeated by Baylor, 17-7. Keith Knoerr (6) and Matt Howe (4) hit home runs for the Frogs. Ryan Walter was the losing pitcher (4-3).
- (4/6) TCU defeated Baylor, 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Matt Howe drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 6th with a 2 run single. Derek Lee (5-2) recorded the victory.
- (4/6) TCU defeated Baylor, 6-1 in the 2nd game. Flint Wallace struck out the side in the top of the 9th, while registering the complete game victory (7-3).
Jeff Yarbrough went 4-for-4, including 2 doubles, to spark the Frog attack. The Frog outhit the Bears 12-5, while Baylor also committed 4 errors.
The Frogs have now won 7 straight conference games.
