Introduction

Under the direction and sponsorship of the Christian Commission for Development (CCD), University Christian Church (UCC) recently conducted a nine-day work project in the mountains of Honduras.

In March of 1995, a group from UCC traveled to Central America to witness the work of this dedicated group of Honduran laypeople. The "CCD" is a non-governmental organization that is seeking to find solutions to the problems of the poor in rural Honduras.

Our assignment was to journey with members of the "CCD" to a tiny, isolated village known as "El Rosario." We were told that we would be the first Anglos ever to visit these people.

Honduran Church

A village in this area is a clearing, sometimes with a school and a church. The people live out in the forest in isolated homes and come to the village only for joint projects and school.

They are just learning to work together as a community. Last year, 12 persons there starved to death when their crops were inadequate to meet the need and their plight was not known until too late.

There is no electricity or telephones in the village. Shortly before our arrival a 900 meter hose had been run down the mountain and up an adjacent hill to a spring there. This was the first running water in the village. Prior to that water was carried up the mountain from the river.
